intro
Fabulous power pop on second album from Duncan Reid, the former bassist with 70's punks the Boys, and his latest band, the Big Heads
Duncan 'Kid' Reid was the bassist with early punk outfit the Boys, who were once described as 'The Beatles of Punk' thanks to their honest pop sensibilities and punk attitude. The Boys were also credited with being Joey Ramone's favourite band, and Reid is one of only two musicians who played/sang with the Ramones without being named as a 'Ramone', having sung on the live version of 'Baby I Love You'. 'The Difficult Second Album' in fact was not that at all according to Duncan, following the success of his new band the Big Heads' debut solo album, 'Little Big Head'. The Peter Pan of punk these days is decked from head to toe in purple and certainly living up to his reputation. The album opens with 'Just as Good as I Used to Be' with the first few bars on a piano suggesting a possible direction change, but just one minute in he returns to the power pop chords and catchy hooks which were evident in earlier Boys' releases. 'Baby Doll' is the third track and, a stand out pop song,is laden with hooks and layered vocals. 'The Difficult Second Album' is full of other power pop tracks along the lines of what Wreckless Eric was so good at producing, especially 'Long Long Gone' and 'C'est la Vie'. Reid's pop sensibilities return with 'When We Were Young', which bears some resemblance to Supertramp. The power pop punk returns with 'One Night in Rio', while 'Wasting Time' closes this really fine power pop collection .
