intro
Confident and polished indie pop on second album from rising Dublin-based band, We Cut Corners
Irish band We Cut Corners follow up their debut album, 2011's 'Today I Realised I Could Go Home' with this second album, 'Think Nothing' which is out on Delphi Records. The duo of ex- primary school teachers John Duignan and Conall O'Breachain have been honing their craft in their native Dublin. The second offering has been produced by Bunt Stafford-Clark who has worked with Elbow and Placebo, and is a confident and polished piece of indie pop destined for better things if it gets the airplay it deserves. It has also also been mixed by Ben Hillier of U2, Blur and Editors fame, and it has already reached the ears of Amazing radio, XFM, Contact Music and BBC London . The band themselves have toured with The Maccabees and Frightened Rabbit. It begins with 'Wallflower', which features a vocal solo with a splash of guitar and drums. It paves the way before the second number ‘Best Friend’ hits you like a steam train with its Arcade Fire-style yells and harmonies drifting into some Pumpkin style guitar licks and drum smashing within. It is is one of the tracks picked for release as a single and reminds me with its harmonies of the Magic Numbers in full flow. There are some quieter moments with 'Maybe in the Future' and some heavier guitar riffs in the brilliant 'This isThen'. The last track 'Hunger' is full of harmonised sweet vocals and strings and steady drums which leave you wanting to play the whole album over again. The band take their influences from Ryan Adams, the Velvet Underground and Leonard Cohen . This should in the right hands lead We Cut Corners into being heard by the masses and in the right hands catapulted onto dizzier heights.
