Versatile and imaginative doom metal on first-rate debut album from Rome-based group, the Wisdoom
The Wisdoom leave nothing to chance. Just check out their moniker. There is no way you would mistake them for an indie band, punk rockers or a jazz ensemble, is there? And indeed you get what it says you are going to get on the tin, yup, full on doom metal that washes over the listener like a barrel of sludge. It’s really something to behold. Then, five minutes in on the opening track ‘Alpha’, after wave upon wave of punishing slow motion riffs a trippy reverb drenched vocal lifts the group to an altogether different level. It’s done in a way reminiscent of Liverpool’s Conan which is always a great thing, where the voice allows for some respite from the pounding riffs and adds a splash of colour to the fuzz encrusted pallet. But the variety doesn’t end there. Album closer ‘Oneiron’ has to tip its hat to the Cure for inspiration with its intro and outro surely and what about my favourite track here, ‘Theta’. It’s got everything. First, it has to be said that the bass sound Wisdoom have captured is especially crushing in its delivery, but mostly I love the splashes of classic rock that are sprinkled in via the guitar leads, and whilst this song contains no vocals it honestly doesn’t need them. After its relatively short seven and a half minute length comes to a close I get the distinct feeling that I’ve been taken somewhere dark, been scared half to death and made it through to the other side. It’s epic story telling with no language needed. Who knows how far the reach is for this sort of thing, hailing from Rome probably won’t do them any favours, but releasing a debut LP this strong with some great distribution from Heavy Psych Sounds the Wisdoom are definitely on track.
