intro
Eclectic folk on debut album from Halifax, Nova Scotia-based band, Banded Stilts
With varied instrumentation including mandolin, violin and banjo, Banded Stilts' 'Little Village' is a fine mix of music. The album is a blend of contemporary folk and alternative roots - down home and comforting. The opener 'The End of February' is contemplative and carries a positive message: “You’ll go on to do great things when you’ve got courage in your stride.” The effect is exuberant healing music, setting its audience right at ease. Starting with a guitar strum, 'Cold' evolves into a reverberant violin serenade with solid straight-up vocals that capture lyrics about inspiration and a feeling of rebirth. 'Leave a Light' is the story of a rambler who still longs for home nevertheless: “I placed my chips of love on black/It always landed red.” The subtle touch of the piano sets the mood on 'Gloria' which is bolstered by the group’s vocal harmonising. Easy, earthy folk, 'Out on the Sea', a song about drifting, expresses a deep longing. 'Stars Go Down' captures a story of two worlds colliding, with the narrator trying to make sense of it all. Acoustic and evocative, 'Wading Bird' includes a fine trombone part. A well played accordion introduces 'The Squid and the Ghost Town.' Like an old time folk music waltz, the song captures both the smell of the sea and the life of a small town. Images of dancing in the square are present. Through their array of stories shared and through their use of eclectic folk instrumentation, Banded Stilts create an album that provides a source of genuine comfort.
