intro
Melancholic but compelling double A-side single from nomadic Australian musician, Kim Churchill
Ahead of his upcoming debut UK album, Australian nomad Kim Churchill has released a beautiful, if melancholic double A-side single. The month spent recording the album was the first time Kim had a permanent roof over his head after leaving home at 17 to busk and surf. "I think I find the most solace in not knowing where I am going and not knowing how I am going to get there," he says. "That way each moment contains the seed of mystery and the excitement of receiving exactly what a person with no expectations expects; nothing." Perhaps it is the combination of being so open to the world and moving around that gives his music a sound that can't be easily slotted into a genre. Maybe there is some blues, but then there might be a more rock-tinged guitar riff, and sprinkled throughout are sounds of the East. Somehow the resulting tracks manage to be simple and complex at the same time. Working with producer Warne Livesey, who has produced Midnight Oil and TheThe among others, has allowed Churchill to achieve a clarity and honesty he feels he has never managed to capture on his own. While the tracks are very different in mood, both feature beautiful and intricate orchestration. ‘Some Days the Rain May Fall’ is delicate and reflective while ‘Fear the Fire’ has more energy that builds quickly, waxing and waning through the song. Fresh from completing a string of dates in Europe after being hand picked to support Billy Bragg, he will be touring Canada in March and April before returning to play in the UK.
