intro
Fabulous seven inch fourth single from London-based psychedelic garage rockers, Charlie Boyer and The Voyeurs
Charlie Boyer and The Voyeurs are part of the new psychedelic scene that has emerged in the last two years, and of which their label Heavenly has been at the forefront of. Along with Temples and Toy, The Voyeurs have updated a tired scene and breathed fresh blood into it without making it look at all rose-tinted. 'Evil Mothers' is the band's fourth single, and, while written by the band, it is also the title of a famous Velvet Underground bootleg LP. The track isn't on their debut album, 'Clarietta', released last year, and like most Heavenly singles it is only available on 7 inch only and limited to a mere 300 copies. It comes in a similar sleeve to the Velvet Underground record, and starts off sounding like a late 70's soundtrack to a gothic soundtrack, before eventually becoming a tight number reminiscent of Television and of the sort of track they would play at CBGB's in 1977, back in the day when you would go into the venue but you wouldn't use its toilet. It is a garage classic, and glows with a wonderful new wave tinted edge which instantly gets your feet to move even if the floor is that sticky. It's B-side is a cover of Ray Davies's 1966 track, 'Wicked Annabella', which hails from the Kinks' concept album, 'The Village Green Preservation Societ'. In The Voyeurs' hands, it becomes mystical in tone, but also captures completely the spirit that the track was written in in all its colourful day-glo brightness.
