intro
Appealing lo-fi experimental EP recorded over ten years ago from Connecticut-based experimental group Sore Eros with much acclaimed rocker Kurt Vile
In case you hadn't noticed, Sore spelt backwards reads Eros; equally Kurt could be read backwards as Truk. And indeed, a forklift truck driver was once what Kurt Vile was. It is amazing how this all falls together. This early work with Sore Eros predates Kurt Vile's successful trad rock indie dad music album from last year. Find instead lots of sonic and resonant try outs with just a few signs of the music that Kurt Vile has later come to record. Dating back to over a decade ago, the recording quality is not magnificent, but the calm, warm folk acoustics of the instrumental 'Jamaica Plain' track make up for it. That is Jamaica in New York City I think, by the way. The slow lullaby quality in 'Serum' and its subdued vocals makes you pensive. 'Calling Out of Work' is built around a distant-sounding acoustic guitar loop in the first part. The middle part is beautifully chirpy, and the last part then resonates into outer space. The EP has the air of a C30 cassette recording. The even qualities in the three tracks give the EP the impact of a crispy urban field recording, or a delicate wasteland soundscape.
