intro
Turbo-charged and catchy debut album which was recorded in a mountain cabin from Calgary-formed duo, Miesha and The Spanks
It is hard not to compare Miesha & The Spanks with their sonic and superb ancestors: Joan Jett and Suzi Quatro. Yet, this high-energy act has enough spark to spur its very own legacy. Headed by Miesha Louie, 'Girls, Like Wolves' is a compact, fully-loaded visceral experience; sort of like a V8 engine in a souped up sports car. Everything about Miesha is natural and relatable, from her single gal digs and primitive voice to her propensity for lyrics that are meaningful, fun, smooth and catchy. The ten tracks reveal the best of her voice and rock-effacing attitude. 'Please Don't Blow' is a great opener. "Please don't blow, you've got to take it slow..." It's connected with blinding rhythms. Then her voice gets a bit rosier in 'Something'. Delicious dissonance rears its head with the repetitive progression of 'Wrecking Ball'. If you fancy an unforgettable bass line, you've got it here. 'This Time' takes us back to the '50s for a while. It's two minutes of pop bliss. 'Song 10' is loopy, trippy, psychedelic and includes a bottomless pit of sonic jabs and surprises. Whilst a few of the tracks are more generic, the band gets back to dizzying guitar on 'Want You To Know', and 'Civilized' is pure entertainment. Look to 'Look At You' and title song, 'Girls, Like Wolves' for jugular riffs and contagious tempo. Stuart Bota is a tremendous drummer, whose skills buoy Louie's every whim. The album was engineered by long-time friend Josh Gwilliam, Pilot Audio, in a log cabin, in the woods, in the mountains. The formula worked like a charm.
