intro
Breathtaking music and video combination on CD/DVD package from Porcupine Tree front man. Steven Wilson
I was massively excited by this release, and, it proves, rightly so. Steven Wilson, best known for his work with Porcupine Tree, has brought together a simply stunning audio visual package, featuring previously unreleased material, live performances and music videos. The music videos, for 'Drive Home' and 'The Raven that Refused to Sing', are simply breathtaking. Musically, the tracks are exactly what one would expect from Wilson: gorgeous, melancholy rock epics with a slight nod to Pink Floyd. The videos maintain that ethos, and the quality of their production and narrative is wonderful. Wilson calls this package an EP. Very few EPs contain this much material (there is well over an album’s worth of material on the CD and DVD), and even fewer contain a collection of this beauty. 'Drive Home', the title track, is a gorgeous record, a wistful love song with a very knowing nod to 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond'. Wilson’s vocal is superb, and the atmosphere of the piece is thoroughly haunting. I’m not usually a fan of music videos, but Wilson has chosen well in his director, Jess Cope, who creates a mesmerising tableau and a clear, and heart-breaking, narrative. The live selections, recorded recently in Frankfurt, are stunning. Wilson’s band sound like a fusion of Richard Wright, Ornette Coleman and John Bonham, the whole glorious circus overseen by Wilson himself. Quite simply, this is a superb package, and would serve as a great introduction to Wilson’s solo work. And, of course, there will be completists like me who would buy it simply “to have everything.” Either way, it’s worth a few quid of anyone’s money. Fabulous stuff.
