intro
Infectious indie-punk on debut album from Northern Ireland trio, the Young Aviators
Hailing from Northern Ireland, this trio are the latest to be chosen by Glasgow’s Stow Colleg- based label Electric Honey Records who brought past releases in the shape of Biffy Clyro and Teenage Fanclub among others. ‘Self Help’ begins with ‘A Sunrise on the Motorway’ and ends with ‘A Sunset on the Motorway’. In between these tracks lies recent single ‘Forward Thinking’, which is probably the strongest song of this collection. The band have been compared to Irish popsters the Undertones, but I think, however, that the Undertones’ guitarists John andDamian O’Neills next band That Petrol Emotion would be a better fit. It's very indie in places, and the influence of early Blur or Franz Ferdinand is evident. ‘First Day on Earth’ with its Arctic Monkeys vibe is a great infectious slice of pop with its sing-a-long chorus. ‘Future Pill’ is a bit of a grower, and ‘Rejection Letter’, which paints a picture of lost youth and the hopelessness of global recession, show the band’s working class upbringing. The comically-titled ‘Deathrays in Disneyland’ may knock you of your stride being a piano ballad rather than the upbeat indie-punk vibe of the bulk of this record, but ‘We've Got Names For Folk Like You’ brings the indie vibe back.
