intro
Angry but humorous political punk on superb split EP from Bedfod-based groups, the Council Tax Band and Ice, Sea, Dead People
The idea of a split EP is a good one. In this case, the EP is split between two Bedford bands: Council Tax Band and Ice, Sea, Dead People. The Council Tax Band have two tracks on the EP, ‘The Bigger the Budget’ and ‘We’re All in This Together’. ‘The Bigger the Budget’ is an edgy, punky explosion of feedback-drenched guitars, blistering drumming and a snarled vocal meditating on the “narcissistic nuptials” of such targets as Peter Andre and Katie Price and Charles and Di. Lyrically, the tone is angry, but it’s also humorous. As contemporary punk offerings go, it’s one of the best I’ve heard in a long time. Second track, ‘We’re All in this Together’, is driven by a catchy guitar riff and lyrically is a spitting attack on the current government and their “poor multi-millionaires.” Again, its anger is tempered with humour and a level of musical ability which sets Council Tax Band far above many of their peers. I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the EP (I only received Council Tax Band’s tracks), but I would buy the EP simply on the back of these two excellent tracks. It’s refreshing to hear a punk band who can actually play and form a coherent, humorous lyric. Two cracking songs from a band I’d love to hear more of.
