intro

Dreamy 1970's Californian-influenced folk pop on debut album from Swedish duo, the Greek Theatre

Originally recorded in a rustic Swedish wood cabin, during some prodigiously productive sessions through the summer of 2009, the Greek Theatre now release 'Lost Out At Sea'. Their rich organic sounds capture the influence of American west coast, California music circa mid-1960s through early 1970s, yet with a take all their own. The core unit of the Greek Theatre is two 40-something Swedish friends, Sven Froberg and Fredrick Persson, who sing and play, (with a bit of assistance,) almost everything on the album. The opener 'Even You Will Find a Home My Son' starts with an easy beat- 1960s influenced folk rock that is lovely and compelling. While coming from Sweden, the Greek Theatre are yet somehow evocative of dusty American roads. Not strictly so- the music remains highly original. The lyric is decisively positive: “So come on/Life has just begun/The best is yet to come.” 'August Streets' is smooth and soothing to the core; a fine vocal accompanies some intricate guitar work. The lyrics capture a picture of perfect peace: “I fell asleep for a while/Among the birds, near the sky.” The sound is somehow reminiscent of vintage Crosby, Stills & Nash. 'Frozen Highway' travels from hushed tones to a bit of stinging lead guitar- adventurous sounds with melodic sensibilities. 'Overprotection Doesn’t Work' opens with Beach Boys style harmonies. This is music both earthbound and pastoral. 'Mountains Meet Ocean Sand' captures images of the beauty of nature, once again very California. 'Close in My Arms' is warm and welcoming, a healing tune offering a bounty of redemption. 'Hold On' features heavenly vocals and inviting piano, transporting the listener to an ethereal space, giving the feeling of walking through clouds. All in all, the Greek Theatre’s 'Lost Out At Ssea' is peaceful and dreamlike throughout - a fine effort.
