Satisfying debut EP from choral-sounding Brighton-based indie guitar act, Common Tongues
Possibly Brighton's best kept secret, Common Tongues were formed in 2010. 'Tether & Twine' is their debut EP following their well-received first single, 'Solitary Thinker'. The band is made up of Tom Anderson, Oli Hinkins, Andrew Stuart-Buttle, Daniel Somers and James Drohan. All five are listed as providing vocals along with assorted guitar, piano, violin, mandolin and harmonium skills. 'Solitary Thinker' is the opening track, a melodic if maudlin muse on the nature of self. A slow intro builds to an almost triumphant climax. The blend of voices and instruments works very well. 'Who Said the Words a Weapon' starts with scratches or taps or something else. It grabs your attention while you try and work it out. 'Something's Got to Give' is full of indie guitars and the tiniest shades of R.E.M. 'Praying to God' beseeches the Almighty not to snatch life away just yet. 'Cold as the Devil' closes the EP,references the title and is a satisfying conclusion. Common Tongues use of multiple vocalists gives their music a different slant. At time they sound almost choral, which contrasts with their guitar driven roots peppered with lots of less obvious sounds.
