intro
Intriguing combination of Indian, African, blues, soul and gospel music on latest solo album from Isle of Man-born Canadian Harry Manx, who includes Taj Mahal and Bruce Springsteen amongst his fans
Isle of Man-born Canadian Harry Manx has a unique sound. He's been called the “essential link” between East and West, sometimes fusing Indian ragas with the blues. Fans include Ben Harper, Taj Mahal and Bruce Springsteen. But, although Harry has a devoted following in the US, Canada and Australia, regularly selling out huge venues, he is less well known in the UK. 'Om Suite Ohm' is Harry's ninth solo record and it has a rather more electric Bollywood feel to it than some of Harry's past material. There's quite a bit of electric slide guitar – especially on the track 'Reubens Train'. There are also violins, cellos, sarangi plus a didgeridoo with Gunjarra Waiterie, an Australian Aboriginal street singer from Melbourne who Harry met on tour, featured on the second track, 'Way Out Back'. Also interesting is Harry's unusual Indian-style interpretation of the great John Coltrane's standard, 'A Love Supreme'. In fact Coltrane was a huge fan of Indian music and a great friend of the late Ravi Shankar. A little-known fact is that 'A Love Supreme' was originally based by Coltrane on a traditional South Indian folk tune '(a dhun)' - so, in a sense, Harry Manx is bringing things full circle here. Another track on the album, 'Carry My Tears', is delivered in classic gospel style and has led to Harry being nominated for a Canadian “Songwriter of The Year” award. 'Om Suite Ohm' will probably appeal to more sophisticated audiences. The album certainly reaffirms Harry Manx's musical virtuosity across a huge range of styles. Few other records combine so skilfully Indian, African, blues, soul and gospel music...and perhaps it is no surprise that Harry has managed to impress the likes of Taj Mahal and Bruce Springsteen!
