Brasstronaut - Mean Sun

‘Mean Sun’ is the second album from the Canadian-based outfit, Brasstronaut. Their debut album, ‘Mount Chimeara’, hinted of influences such as the early Cure and Talk Talk, but this new collection of songs is more pop-oriented. ‘Bounce’ opens ‘Mean Time’, and has a swaggering slo-core sound which recalls a film soundtrack. ‘Francisco’ has a New Wave funky bass line from John Walsh, while Edo Van Breemen’s vocals are dipped in an early 80’s sound, both of which make this make this track reminiscent of the Lotus Eaters. ‘Mean Sun’, the title track, is much more moody in its focus, but flows well.‘Fossil’ has abrasive beats, but again is very poppy. ‘The Grove’ has a Cinemascope sound, Bryan Davies’ trumpet giving it a sad, jazzy feel ‘Moonwalker’ is a smooth, slo-core number with the drive of early Prefab Sprout. ‘Revelstoke Dam’ has a mid-1970’s pop feel, with flutes and a mandolin giving it an element of the Incredible String Band. ‘Hymn for Huxley’ is an elegant pop number with soft piano, gentle guitar and a lovely vocal. ‘Falklands’ comes over like a smooth but fast Aztec Camera, and Van Breemen’s vocals on it recall Stuart Murdoch from Belle and Sebastian. Towards the end it picks up its pace like the soundtrack of a film coming to a close. ‘Mixtape’ is a song for lovers, while the trumpet adds more seductive values to the already crisp notes. A first-rate album.
