Hello, and welcome to the November edition of the Pennyblackmusic Magazine. We have now been going for fourteen years at Pennyblackmusic, and during that time many of our writers-Ben Howarth, Mark Rowland, Anthony Strutt, Anthony Dhanendran, Malcolm Carter, Andrew Carver, Maarten Schiethart, Dan Cressey and Dixie Ernill-have been there for almost as long as Richard Banks, our webmaster, and myself. Many of them are out again present this month. Ben Howarth in the lead interview chats to the much acclaimed London-based singer-songwriter Darren Hayman about his new album 'The Violence', which takes as its main inspiration the seventeenth century Essex Witch Trials. As much by chance as anything, Ben also talks to Hayman's former bandmate in Hefner, Jack Hayter, about his new twelve single digital project and the joys of recording at home. He also provides another in his 'Condemned to Rock 'n' Roll' columns in which he questions the point of the Mercury Music Awards. Anthony Strutt interviews bassist Peter Hook about his new book on Joy Division, 'Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division', and also interviews eight-piece Cardiff-based indie pop act the School and Japanese alternative rock act Taffy. Mark Rowland meanwhile chats to film composer Thomas Newman about his score for the new James Bond film, 'Skyfall', while Anthony Dhanendran provides a 'Re:View' for a new box set of the Jam's 'A Gift', which has been released to coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of their break-up. There is also a live review from Dixie Ernill about a recent gig in their native Bristol for his favourite group the Experimental Pop Band, and one from Andrew Carver for Halloween is Doomed!, a five band heavy metal mini festival in Ottawa. This particular edition is also, however, well-represented by some of our newer writers, many of whom have risen to fore for the first time this month. Harry Sherriff with assistance from photographer Marie Hazelwood interviews anthemic pop act Spector at a show in Liverpool. He also provides live revies of shows by Catfish and the Bottlemen and the Wicked Whispers. Dave Goodwin came into the site a few months ago as a photographer, but provides five live reviews of shows from Bat for Lashes, Hazel O' Connor, Zappa Plays Zappa, the Selecter and the Twang. On the subject of photographers, Darren Aston and Amy Rawlinson provide their first written pieces for Pennyblackmusic. Darren writes of a recent Black gig at the Kazimier in Liverpool, while Amy interviews Newton Faulkner at a show in Liverpool. Fiona Hutchings has been with for a while now, about three years, but has also provided her first interview for the site with Ausrtalian/New Zealand but Italian-based duo Pete Ross and Rhe Sapphire. Thank you to all of the above. Thank you also to Peter Allison, Carl Bookstein, Malcolm Carter, Tom Fogarty, Adrian Huggins, Richard Lewis, Spencer Robertshaw, Jon Rogers, Jamie Rowland, Maarten Schiethart, Dominic B. Simpson, Lisa Torem and Paul Waller, all of whom contributed articles to this edition or the mid-month update. Thank you also to Marie Hazelwood for the Spector, Cattlefish and the Bottlemen and Wicked Whispers photo shoots. Special thanks to our webmaster Richard Banks for all his hard work. We will be doing an album and singles reviews only update in late November and then will be doing our next big monthly up-date with interviews, features, live reviews and more album and single reviews in December. We hope to run interviews then with Frank Turner, Mark Gardener, Sharon Shannon, Her Name is Calla, Baltic Fleet, Glissando, Warren McIntyre, Dodson and Fogg, the Old Ceremony, Linnea Olsson and Kat Parsons. Thank you as always for reading Pennyblackmusic, John Clarkson, Magazine Editor www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk
