intro

Superb double CD collection of live performances by musicians including Elbow, Arcade Fire and Amy Winehouse for BBC Radio 6 Music

'This is BBC Radio 6 Music Live' is a phenomenal collection of razor sharp live performances by outstanding artists. It opens with Elbow’s ‘Leaders of the Free World’ in which the subject is described as “just little boys throwing stones.” ‘Keep The Car Running’ features the escalating instrumental tensions and on-the-edge solo and backing vocals that prime Arcade Fire’s prowess. ‘Stronger Than Me’ reigns supreme because of Amy Winehouse’s bursts of rubato, and just hearing it recalls her much-missed perfect ear. ‘That Dragon Age’ by Paul Weller and Friends is short, but profound. ‘Mama’ by the Alabama Shakes has rootsy conviction, while MGMT’s ‘Congratulations’ has uncanny approachability. Beck’s ‘I Think I’m In Love’ has beautiful Calypso undertones. Friendly Fire, with ‘Paris’ lacks a strong identity, but Michael Kiwanuka’s ‘Tell Me A Tale,’ broadcasts a delightful symmetry with its prose. ‘Strict Machine’ by Goldfrapp has an impossible not to dance to groove. ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ by Foster The People fuses pop/folk brilliantly. ‘Leave Your Body Behind You’ finds the legendary Richard Hawley at his existential best: “It’s what folks say when you walk out the door…” With an overall bellowing exuberance and an extraordinary guitar solo, Hawley’s contribution is one of the better selections. It’s a tough tie between Florence and the Machine (‘Dog Days Are Over’) and Lana Del Ray’s ‘Video Games’ because both vocalists are incredibly original and defy classification. First Aid Kit definitely is playing with fire when they tackle the Stones cover by the same name, but it’s an embracing cover, at that. Janelle Monae’s jazzy ‘Tightrope’ leaves you on the edge of your seat due to its swirling melody line. ‘Rocks’ by Primal Scream features a pronounced rock hook, which does not disappoint. ‘Paper Romance’ by Groove Armada offers us a completely different texture; an electrifying duet. ‘Hips and Lips’ by Maximo Park is musically tight, but the grand finale by Manic Street Preachers, ‘If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next’ is well worth the wait. 6 Music presents a terrific cross section of contemporary artists that will please both British audiences and any others who long to be in the cultural loop.
