intro

Excellent latest single from angular three-piece Monmon, who are part of the blossoming Leeds independent music scene

Leeds 3-piece Monmon’s latest offering comes in the form of the 3-track EP ‘Sheep Hanger Blues’. Now I do not know if this is a confession, or a threat? Or if the problem in Leeds or people hanging sheep is still a big issue, I know it used to be when I lived in Yorkshire. The fact that they added Blues at the end of makes me think they’re sad about it, so it’s probably not a problem they themselves have caused, but either way this is a cracking EP. I would say that it is probably every three months that I review a band from Leeds and pretty much always say how good they are, and Monmon are not ones to be thrown into the ‘dissapointed’ section. Across the three tunes on display here, ‘Punch Drunk’, ‘Something:anything’ and ‘Black Light’, we see a brilliant mix of Les Savy Fav, a much gentler Bronx and a bit less in your face Future Of the Left. Of particular note is the final tune ‘Black Knight’, sounding like ‘Bleach- era Nirvana but with a real unexpected swagger that you don’t really see coming until it is too late. Leeds is where it is at still. Please Leeds don’t do anything to ever make me question this.
