intro
Excellent glam and psychedelic rock-influenced fourth album from Birmingham-born, but now New York-based singer-songwriter, Edward Rogers
Edward Rogers was born in Birmingham, but moved with his family to New York when he was twelve. He took up drumming, but in 1985, an accident left him without the use of one of his arms and one of his legs, so he taught himself to write songs. It was nearly two decades between his accident and his first solo album, but Rogers has been prolific since, with this his fourth solo album, sitting alongside two more with his band, the Bedsit Poets. Recorded with members of Cracker and Nada Surf, as well as session musicians who’ve played with Ian Hunter, Graham Parker and Bruce Springsteen, Rogers has moved away from the folk-pop of earlier albums, and made what he proudly describes as his rockiest album so far. Rogers says that he wanted this album to be a tribute to the music he listened to between 1972 and 1975. So, there are plenty of nods to Bowie and glam-rock, as well as some sharply written psych pop and even a few that sound like the Stooges. But, you’re never too far from another nod towards his obvious hero, Bruce Springsteen. It makes for a good mix. This record is a masterclass in classic rock songwriting - tunes you didn’t know you hadn’t heard before, world weary singing and lyrics exploring, in a variety of ways, what it means to live in New York in 2012. Wonderful guitar solos as well, by the way. Of course, Rogers won’t become big. In fact, he’ll be very lucky to even become medium sized. But, he makes something that we all know is very difficult to do sound very easy. Play loud.
