intro
Colourful and timeless-sounding second album from 60's-influenced Atlanta-based alternative rock act, Gringo Star
Yes, of course, you’re probably drawn to reading this for the same reason I was drawn to writing about this band - great name. Well that, and the comparisonsthey have drawn in with the Brian Jonestown Massacre. If either of those ring true, then I am more than happy to say that you will be as pleased as I was when I let ‘Count Yer Lucky Stars’ have a spin on my CD player. With the psychedelic feel of the 60’s along with a whole heap of garage rock and a bit of Merseybeat thrown in, Gringo Star have a fantastic sound and a brilliant, colourful and fun vibe about them. Sounding a bit like the younger cousins of Jack White, or in fact Brian Jonestown Massacre on a very good and happy day this, the band's second album, is sure to pick them up yet more followers. With their self applied ‘classic pop‘ sound and with moments like ‘Beatnik Angel Georgie‘ and ‘Jessica‘, they will surely garner fans a plenty along the way. Producer Ben Allen, who has previously worked with the likes of Gnarls Barkley and Deerhunter, has done a great job of getting the most out of the band musically. Gringo Star have that grown up, credible, yet indie feeling that many groups seem to shoot for and somehow just miss out on in some way. Led by brothers Peter and Nicholas Furgiuele on vocals, guitars and a handful of instruments, backed up superbly by Chris Kaufmann playing slide guitar among other things and Pete DeLorenzo on the drums….and also guitar, acoustic guitar, keys….let's just say they’re all great musicians with multiple talents that all shine through on this joyous album. The band have an utterly timeless feel and are a breath of fresh air, I hope others enjoy this as much as I have been.
