Hello and welcome to the welcome to the November edition of the Pennyblackmusic magazine. On the 29th October we returned to the Half Moon in Herne Hill, South London for one of our twice yearly Bands’ Night there and had a memorable evening of music with superb sets from co-headliners Morton Valence and Madam and support acts the Doomed Bird of Providence and Rome Pays Off. We have always thought it important to put on regular gigs promoting some of the acts that we have been talking about in the magazine, and for myself and several of the other Pennyblackmusic staff who turned up it was, with four exceptional and enthusiastic bands, one of our best Bands’ Night ever. We are now going to be closing the year off with our first ever gig in Manchester at Gullivers in Oldham Street on Saturday November 19th, which has been organised by our Northern writer Dixie Ernill. Our main act will be the Experimental Pop Band, the current group of Davey Woodward, whose previous band the Brilliant Corners were one of the most influential indie pop bands of the 1980s. They will be travelling up from Bristol for the occasion, and Davey will also be supporting himself by playing a solo set. There will also be on the bill another two acts, a local folk pop act Becca and the Broken Biscuits who will be playing as a two-piece including a cellist, and Brilliant Mind, an indie pop band from Newcastle. Tickets are available from We Got Tickets at http://www.wegottickets.com/event/137084 at the advance price of £6. They will also be available on the night at £8. In the mean time we have another very full edition of our magazine. In our lead interview this month, Sarah Maybank speaks to Indian-English musician, composer and Mercury Award nominee Nitin Sawhney at show at the Union Chapel in London about his latest album, ‘Last Days of Meaning’, which features a performance from actor John Hurt as elderly racist Donald Meaning, and also his recent BAFTA-nominated soundtrack, ‘Human Planet’. Our other main interviews this month are with Howard Devoto from post-punk band Magazine who have just released ‘No Thyself’, their first new album in 28 years; Dweezil Zappa on his ‘Zappa to Zappa’ project upon which he plays the songs of his late father, Frank Zappa; 70’s rock ‘n’ roll act the Pirates, and singer and former Phil Spector protégée Darlene Love on her fifty years in the music business. We are also running interviews this month with acclaimed instrumental group the Ventures; Norwegian noise rock duo Arabrot, and the Experimental Pop Band about their first appearance in eight years in Manchester at our Bands’ Night. There are new interviews too with Montrose and Gamma guitarist Ronnie Montrose; Edinburgh-based post-punk band the Cathode Ray; Swiss-Canadian noise rock act Peter Kernel and Liverpool-based acoustic singer-songwriter Luke Fenlon. In our Profiles section there are articles on Phil Spector, Scottish hard rockers Nazareth and Dusty Springfield, all of whom have recently been the subject of box sets, and new books on Joan Jett and by 1960’s ‘Rolling Stone’ photographer Baron Wolman. In our Live Section there are reviews of shows by Roddy Woomble, Submotion Orchestra, Young Knives, Nitin Sawhney, Magazine, Sloan, Arabrot and Jessie J. In our Regular Features section there is an article on our recent London bands’ Night. Mark Rowland asks why there is so much snobbery about popular music in ‘Rock 101’. Andy Cassidy has got to the letter ‘B’ in ‘AC’s Guide of Music’ and examines an obscure album by the Buffet Car Attendants which is made up entirely of announcements for the buffet car on trains. Ben Howarth in ‘Condemned to Rock ‘n’ Roll' reflects upon Pete Townshend's recent inaugural Radio 6 Music John Peel lecture in which he described Apple's iTunes as a “digital vampire”, while Jon Rogers in 'Hitting the Right Note' examines the over-used term of genius and provides a personal short list of six musical acts that for him fall into that category. There is another poem from Spencer Robertshaw in ‘Evidently Spencertown’ and Steve McDermott provides a ‘Photoscape’ of Virginia-based folk act Old Sledge. In our ‘Re: View’ section there are articles on Jethro Tull’s ‘Aqualung’ and Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O’ Sullivan’s 'Himself#, both of which have been the subject of 40th anniversary reissues, and American alternative rock act Archers of Loaf’s 1993 debut album,‘Icky Mettle’. Fiona Hutchings meanwhile has shaken up the Website of the Month column to move in a new direction by focusing on blogs, and begins with the American blog, ‘Classic Rock Music’. There are also 32 new album, single and DVD reviews. Thank you to Peter Allison, Carl Bookstein, Malcolm Carter, Andrew Carver, Andy Cassidy, Daniel Cressey, Anthony Dhanendran, Tom Fogarty, Marie Hazelwood, Ben Howarth, Adrian Huggins, Fiona Hutchings, Richard Lewis, Sarah Maybank, Spencer Robertshaw, Jon Rogers, Jamie Rowland, Mark Rowland, Maarten Schiethart, Dominic Simpson, Kelly Smith, Anthony Strutt, Lisa Torem, Paul Waller and Denzil Watson, all of whom contributed articles to this edition or the October reviews up-date. Thank you too to Steve McDemott for the Old Sledge photos and Jim Summaria for the Ronnie Montrose photos. Special thanks to our webmaster Richard Banks. We will be back in late November with another albums, singles and DVD reviews up-date and then in December with another new edition. We hope to be running interviews then with Patrick Duff, This Mortal Coil, the Alabama 3, Graham Parker, Robin Trower, Richmond Fontaine, Thrum, The Good The Bad, Herbie Armstrong and Sharon Van Etten. Thank you as always for reading, John Clarkson Magazine Editor www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk
