You’d never guess,even from more than a few plays, that ‘Hurt Like Me’ was not only written but sung and with such soulfulness by a twenty-two year old from Nashville. Kelly Paige not only has a passionate, convincing vocal style that belies her young years, but if her self-written debut single is any indication of the songs on her forthcoming album then she is also way beyond her years in her composing skills too. Far from the sweet-country influenced song we might expect from someone with her background, Kelly delivers a cutting, bluesy tale of revenge to an unfaithful lover. ‘Hurt Like Me’ is given an atmospheric treatment, starting almost creepily which sets the scene perfectly before Kelly’s raspy vocals come in and leave you in no doubt that this is one girl who means business. A surprisingly catchy chorus lifts the song and the fuzzy, distorted guitars add a menacing edge to the song. But maybe the most striking thing about the whole performance is the way that Kelly lets lose a small, stifled laugh (or is it a sneer?) after revealing that she is aware of the wrong being done to her. I, for one, wouldn’t like to get on the wrong side of her after listening to this convincing performance. Living in London since the beginning of this year Kelly has now returned to the States and,although her album was written both here and in Nashville, ‘Hurt Like Me’ was produced in the UK. As a taster for the forthcoming album this single release works perfectly; it leaves you wanting to hear more from this obviously talented guitar-playing singer songwriter.
