intro

Uninspired and indistinctive electronica on third album from much aclaimed Denver-based group, Breathe Carolina

Breathe Carolina are Denver-based duo Kyle Even and David Schmitt. This, their third full-length album is, for me, a pretty disappointing affair. The album lacks inspiration, and throughout the course of its thirteen tracks, there is little sign of originality. Step into any night club, anywhere in the world, and you will hear countless bands that sound just like this playing songs that sound just like these. The album is basically heavy electro-pop, with elements of dance and techno evident throughout. Lead single 'Blackout' is, like the remainder of the album, vapid and uninspired - overbearing, basic, programmed synth-beats compete for space on cluttered tracks with desultory lyrics and vocoder-style vocals. This genre is not generally noted for its lyrical qualities, and 'Hell is What You Make It' is no exception, with barely rhyming couplets and uninspiring imagery throughout. Breathe Carolina’s previous output has been very well-received, particularly in their native USA, and I can understand why – it is, to use the cliché, exactly what you see on the tin. Their brand of electro would fit perfectly in any DJ’s mix, but it is indistinguishable from their peers’ work. This is, very much, an album for a certain time and place - late Saturday night in a club, for instance, where one’s critical faculties are not at their most acute. It is not an album for home or casual listening. If you are a fan of hardcore electro, then this album may be of interest to you. It is not, however, an album which I would be keen to listen to again.
