Hello, and welcome to the June edition of the Pennyblackmusic Magazine. Our lead interview this month is with the influential Toronto-based group, the Cowboy Junkies. One of the pioneers and guiding lights of the alt-country movement, the group’s guitarist and chief songwriter Michael Timmins speaks to Richard Lewis about their landmark 1988 second album, ‘The Trinity Session’, and their latest record, ‘Demons’ which is a set of covers of songs by their friend Vic Chesnutt who committed suicide in 2009. The other main interviews this month are with Exene Cervenka from seminal Los Angeles political punks X; groundbreaking New York indie pop act the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, whose main songwriter Kip Bernam talks about their sophomore album, ‘Belong’; Ian Pattison from the Mercury Prize-winning Gomez about their latest album, ‘Whatever’s On Your Mind’, and recently reformed Leeds-based Gothic-influenced alternative rockers, the March Violets. There are also interviews this month with cello-driven New York band Rasputina; English folk pop duo the Webb Sisters, who having spent two years touring with Leonard Cohen, have recently released their second album, ‘Sirens’, and American singer-songwriter and alternative musician Sarabeth Tucek about her latest album, ‘Get Well Soon’. We are also running interviews with former Picture House guitarist Duncan Maitland about his long planned debut solo album, ‘Lullabies of the 21st Century’, acclaimed American singer-songwriter Andrew Vladeck about his latest EP ‘Passing Knowledge’, and Manchester-based psychedelic folk act Samson and Delilah. There is also a book review of Julian Dawson’s new biography, ‘And On Piano, Nicky Hopkins: The Extraordinary Life of Rock’s Greatest Session Man’. Jon Rogers meanwhile in ‘Hitting the Right Note’ examines capacity for bad behaviour and excess. There is a poem from Spencer Robertshaw on time, and a double Photoscapes from Marie Hazelwood on Liverpool Sound City.
