intro
Deranged, but fantastic psychobilly on debut album from Italian-based group, the Fiftyniners
'Psychorama' is the debut album from Italian psychobillies, the Fiftyniners. It opens in true rockabilly fashion with a crashing drum and guitar led instrumental, which sounds like the theme tune to a demented 50’s TV show. After this perfect introduction, what follows is the confusion fusion of some brass instruments being strangled, which leads perfectly into the title track which is where the main attraction really begins. It features classic walking bass and jazz drums until the rocking and rolling chorus gives you a punk shaped nut to the head, and the TV show ceases to sound just 50’s and now creepy as hell like some a B-movie X-rated version of 'The Munsters' (which if that ever happens I want a cut of the profits for thinking of it first). The Fiftyniners come across like a less gravelly Demented Are Go or a touch more refined Meteors. ‘Lucky’ and ‘Old Rocker’ are great big tasty slabs of the sort of tunes that should be in anyway ‘billy’ inclined then you'll enjoy. What makes the Fiftyniners a really exciting prospect is, however, the roundedness of their album. Look no further than ‘Waiting’ to blow all my first comparisons out the water, as the guys crack out the acoustics and make something which can be more likened to some kind of twisted folk music. My personal favourite moment of ‘Psychorama’ comes in the form of ‘Alone’ which is a hillbilly number. You can practically taste swamp water, crocodiles and incest as a result of its banjos, solid foot beats and slide guitar. This is one of the best songs I have heard in ages, straight up catchy and fun, I would imagine that if the much missed members of Lynyrd Skynyrd are kicking it somewhere in heaven you would hear them strumming something sounding like this. This is a really fun and accomplished album from a band that manage to play with and avoid all the usual clichés all at the same time. I really hope they make it to Britain sometime.
