Fabulous mixing of dub, world music, electronica and reggae from London-based producer and songwriter, Gaudi
Gaudi is a producer and songwriter and master of nearly all things musical. He is, however, best known for his contributions to dub, world music and electronica. ‘No Prisoners’ manages to incorporate elements of all of these genres together simultaneously and is an absolutely diamond of an album. Also branching into reggae, it builds over the course of the record to create several magnificent moments. Something of a ‘who’s who’ of the reggae and dub world, an enviable array of talent joins Gaudi on ‘No Prisoners’. One of the highlights of the album is the fantastic ‘No Time' which features Dr Israel of Easy All Stars. This is a tune that sweeps you up and bounces you along with its rhythm and swagger. It could be a huge tune if taken to the masses and has you swaying and singing along instantly. Another one of the main highlights comes with a guest aapperance from Michael Franti of Spearhead. He lends his vocals to ‘There’s Enough’, not disappointing by adding politically driven lyrics to the fray. In true reggae style if you’re looking to switch off and just get down to it, then the music and melody here is more than enough, but it also packs the punch that Franti is so renowned for. It is a real dark and dirty tune that dips down then brings you up throughout. ‘Bad Boy Bass’ and ‘Hotel Caledonia’ throw down electronica vibes and they do it so well that they show exactly why Gaudi is so well respected throughout the world and across so many different genres. ‘Strictly Goodness’ mixes up dub and dance in a Chemical Brothers way. ‘Barracudub’, which features pioneering dub producer Dub Gabriel, is also in this vein. There are even some mellower and funky moments on 'No Prisoners'. ‘Brainwashed Again’ features Italian songstress Elisa and there are some incredible basslines at play on ‘Back to Ba’a'. ‘No Prisoners’ is a fantastic album that covers a lot of ground, but at the same time it never sounds like it has all been heaped together for the sake of it. It is clear that Gaudi is an absolute master of his craft, not only by the sheer amount of talent that are obviously so keen to work with him, but by every tune, every sound and every instrument on this album. Fabulous.
