intro
Dark and often harrowing dubstep on superb debut album from New Zealand-based group, Truth
‘Puppets’ is the first full-length album by Kiwi dubsteppers Truth. Being such a small nation as it is you don’t tend to hear of many bands coming over and making a big dint on the European scene, but Truth may well buck that trend competely. They mix up up perfectly the most downbeat and atmospheric and almost ambient sounds with the downright filthy bass lines that make dubstep such a popular and upcoming genre. ‘Puppets’ is a fantastically put together album. Not having a vast knowledge of dubstep other than enjoying it in clubs, I was intrigued to hear a specific artist and see what a full length album would be like. I was right to be intrigued as this is a brilliant album. One component that Trust have got well and truly right is that of patience. They build and build and let the sounds gradually rise up before they utterly slay you with bone crushing, gut rumbling bass lines. Trust manage to create a vibe and feel that at times has a real Portishead feel to it, especially on ‘Don’t Explain’. They also manage to turn the comfy vibes into something much dark and harrowing on tracks such as ‘Terror Planet Trip’. The superb and aptly named ‘Dead Silence’ sounds like it has been lifted straight off some gritty underground zombie flick. It will definitely have you looking over your shoulder. My personal favourite stand out tracks, however, include ‘Juno’, ‘Wire Vibe Brocolli’, and ‘Lab Rat’, all of which showcase the real dubstep sound and hit the deepest, lowest and bass-iest points imaginablet and get your jaw chattering as they kick in. I think these songs really bring out the best of dubtep and capture perfectly the awesome power that it holds especially in the live or club setting, where you feel literally consumed by the drum beats and bass lines. This album is so much worth checking out that I can not emphasise it enough.
