intro
Superb compilation of the solo work of Stuart Moxham, the guitarist and main songwriter with groundbreaking late 1970's indie pop group, Young Marble Giants
My first idea was to write this review without even mentioning Stuart Moxham's involvement in the fantastic, groundbreaking 1970's indie pop trio Young Marble Giants, as I thought that it would be nice for his music to stand on its own. But then I thought that it would be silly not to mention it, so I decided to get it over with straight away. So, now you know. Ever since the break-up of that previously mentioned band in which he was the main songwriter and guitarist, Stuart has continued to make music on his own, first under the name the Gist (which released one album and a couple of singles in the early 80’s) and then under his own name, working with a lot of different musicians over the years, among them his brother Andrew, whose drumming can be heard on nearly all the tracks on this compilation of Stuart’s solo work from 1981 up until now. It is quite a varied bunch of songs that has been picked here, ranging from some really poppy tunes to some more experimental and folksy ones. Those of you who have read my reviews before might not be very surprised to hear that the poppy ones are my favourites, especially the opening track “Vampire of love”, which is a real gem, and includes handcalps. But with that said, I really like all the twenty songs presented here, and it once again proves that Stuart Moxham is a great songwriter, and also a great singer. Apparently, this CD is the first one on his own label, Habit, so I’m looking forward to more in the future!
