intro
Patchy, but occasionally compelling and brilliant collection of modern love songs from Pixies front man, Black Francis
Many people would not put the man who once howled about "slicing up eyeballs" at the top of a list of those they expect or wish to hear modern love songs from. Approaching his new album, 'Nonstoperotik', the listener would also be well advised to remember that back in his Pixies-leading pomp Frank 'Black Francis' Black also once opened a song with the line, "There was this man, who had two children with his sisters/Who were is daughters, who were is favourite lovers." In other words, those of a prudish and offend-able nature should steer clear. Open minded lovers of music, and open minded lovers, should come right on in. His recent occasional moves toward more tuneful songs also continues, with only occasional flashes of the wild animal that was the Pixies coming through. Also, while a number of the tracks on 'Nonstoperotik' are compelling, few are erotic. This is more a confident and self-aware exploration of sexuality than an attempt at titillation. In other hands some of the lyrics here might be unintentionally hilarious, but under Black Francis's touch they manage to avoid this, despite containing gems such as “Pardon my cliché, but I want it with you ... I want to be to be inside/That's my intention, inside of you.” Actually, the stand out track on this album is probably the intensely personal 'When I Go Down On You', which claims that money, friends and “somebody new” are all surplus to requirements given the transformative nature of performing the action described. This is not to say this is a great album. Black/Francis's patchy solo output continues, with brilliant tracks alongside more forgettable additions to this prolific back catalogue. Even when it's not great though, 'Nonstoperotik' is worth experiencing.
