intro
Fine second EP of indie pop from the Boy Who Trapped the Sun, the moniker of Isle of Lewis-born singer-songwriter Colin MacLeod
Colin Macleod is The Boy Who Trapped The Sun. He left the Isle Of Lewis to seek fame and fortune in London and, according to the press release, became an adult. Judging by the quality of this EP, following on from his debut, 'Watermara, the trip south has paid off. Apart from the title track that suffers a little from over production, this is a fine collection songs by an artist who proves himself a worthy addition to the singer songwriter genre that has become somewhat resurgent in recent years. ‘In The Dark’ and ‘The Fox’ are similar to the gentler moments of fellow Scots the Trash Can Sinatras or even the now sadly defunct Australian band the Lucksmiths. Ed Harcourt-esque piano is added to the mix to good effect. As good as the above two are, it is ‘Lying To Get On Your Good Side’ that is the real highlight with it’s slightly distorted vocals, it could easily have been a single by a hybrid of the Last Shadow and Jens Lekman. Final track, ‘Change The Clocks’ is the sparsest on the EP, but still worth repeated listens. Reminiscent of the Library Trust or even Stephen Fretwell it bodes well for the forthcoming debut long player. With songs this good the boy may have also have trapped the heavens too.
