intro
Brooding and anthemic post-punk on debut EP from promising Joy Division-influenced Leeds-based band, Club Smith
Interpol became America’s answer to Joy Division and the Editors became England’s answer to Interpol and White Lies became the weaker spawn of all the above three. They showed promise at the outset, but unfortunately their debut album failed to build on the potential of debut single 'Unfinished Business'. Where do new Leeds’ band Club Smith fit in? Well they too could be related to all of the above bands, but where White Lies have failed to live up to the possibilities of greatness, Club Smith could still do so if debut release 'The Loss EP' is anything to go by. Mixing the same brooding but anthemic qualities that the aforementioned bands possess with the slightly more melodic touches of the now sadly defunct London band the Apartment, Club Smith have the opportunity to succeed. All four of the songs on this EP are equally strong, but'Courtyard' is probably the pick and if they continue to release songs of this qualityWhite Lies will soon be relegated to a mere footnote in the encyclopedia of bands influenced by Joy Division and Club Smith will be awarded a full chapter.
