intro
Excellent double CD retrospective released to celebrate the tenth anniversary of highly acclaimed jazz and soul label and club, Tru Thoughts
The Tru Thoughts label is synonymous with quality soul, jazz, funk, beat-breaking, bossabopping, cool strutting music. This release celebrates 10 years of delivering 100% of pure passion to it’s club nights and release buyers. Name checked by 'The Guardian' and legendary DJ Gilles Peterson as a source of ideals and purity in the ‘rebirth of the cool’, this release offers a true insight into what drives the label, its artists and staff. Modern funky jazz and it’s soulful complements are a bit scarce at the moment, Tru Thoughts have the tunes to put the rut back in your strut and some glide in your stride, showing that there are still some very good bands cutting the cloth on select dance floors country and European wide. The compilation starts with a CD of laid back tunes (still covering all ground in music terms). It would be unfair to pick a favourite as every track has quality treaded all the way through and I have found that each play brings out more and more from the compilation. The tempo picks up on the second CD delivering tracks that make it impossible to resist a trip to the dance floor, ahd which are brilliant and mood enhancing wherever they are played. The Tru Thoughts posse have got it nailed when it comes to artist selection. It doesn’t surprise me that the club nights they run are such a roaring success. If I had to sum up the release using a list it would go something like this: Soul Jazz Funk Crisp and clear Hammond organ Brazilian Northern soul Motown James Brown Sax Trumpet Latino Old school New school Rebirth of the cool Strutting Vocal silk That’s Tru Thoughts, sharper than an Armani suit on Daniel Craig.
