intro
Fantastic debut album from hardcore supergroup, Spinnerette, which including former Distillers' front woman Brody Dalle in its line-up, takes its inspiration from acts as diverse as My Bloody Valentine, the 13th Floor Elevators and Hole
Spinnerette are Brody Dalle - that's Mrs Josh Homme to you - who was formerly in the band the Distillers which she folded in 2006 ; Alain Johannes who is also in Queens of the Stone Age ; Tony Bevilacqua again from the Distillers and Jack Irons of Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. 'Ghetto Love' opens this debut album from this project which effectively features some of the biggest names in hardcore Americana. It is edgy and bass-led, with a raw vocal from Brody. On 'All Babes are Wolves' Spinnerette sound like a hardcore Pretenders. 'Cupid' is again bass led, with a vocal from Brody that Courtney Love would kill for and guitars that are gritty and mean. 'Geeking' is a decent hard rocker with big attitude. 'Baptized by Fire' was a recent single, and sounds like my Bloody Valentine but with added grit. 'A Special Suspension' is a slow-paced rocker that soon wakes up and rocks out, while the pop-edged 'Distorting A Code' is as seductive as early Blondie. 'Sex Bomb' sounds like an angry Hole or Distillers with its full-on guitars, while 'Driving Songs' is something of a rocker in the vein of Garbage. 'Rebellious Palpitations' sounds like a fuzzy Ash jamming with Hole, while 'The Walking Dead' is a slow rocker with another Hole-style vocal. 'Impaler' is a banjo paced number like R.E.M's 'Losing My Religion' sung by a girl, while 'A Prescription for Mankind' is a Nirvana-style masterpiece of a track. It ends with a secret track which sounds like 'A Prescription for Mankind' played backwards. Inspired by both My Bloody Valentine and the 13th Floor Elevators as well as the more obvious influences of Hole and Nirvana, 'Spinnerette' is a hell of an album.
