intro
Excellent new single from Cardiff-based five-piece People in Planes, which combines its blues-rock sound with a more modern and commercial style
Once in a while you will hear a record and your ears will prick up and you think who is that ? What is that band ? 'Last Man Standing' by People in Planes is one of those records. It has a very 60’s feel but at the same time you know it’s a modern record and not something from way back. It crosses a blues-rock sound with a more modern and commercial style, which makes it very pleasant to listen to. There is enough variation with this song for it not to bore you. It gains its power from a very solid and regular drumbeat that gives the rest of the band plenty of scope to skate around. Even the use of a keyboard comes through very well. Singer Gareth Jones' vocals are on the gravelly side, and there is a touch of Joe Cocker in there at times which can never be a bad thing. This song has a lot of imagination behind it and I could happily play it over and over. I can’t wait to hear their new album, 'Beyond The Horizon', now. You could buy much worse records than this. Go on to their MySpace page and listen to 'Last Man Standing' and then tell me that this isn’t one of the better records of the year so far.
