Hello and welcome to the March edition of the Pennyblackmusic magazine. Damon and Naomi first came to notoriety in the mid 80s as two thirds, with Dean Wareham the other component, of the short-lived, but influential Galaxie 500. In our lead interview this month, the Cambridge, Massachusetts duo and husband-and-wife team speak to Dominic Simpson before a show at the Luminaire in West London about their years with the lo-fi psychedelic rockers, and their career and many albums since then including collaborations with the Japanese act Ghost. In our other main interviews this month Anthony Strutt talks to the owner of the former Creation label Alan McGee about his influential label and own bands the Laughing Apple and Biff Bang Pow ! ; Sarah Johnson chats to Joe Gideon from indie duo Joe Gideon and the Shark about his group’s long-awaited debut album, ‘Harum Scarum’ and Jonjo McNeill speaks to New York/Japanese group Asobi Seksu about their third album, ‘Hush’. There are other new interviews as well with American singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell, ; visionary classical 80s group Shelleyan Orphan ; recently reformed cult act the Wild Swans ; rising rockers the Gaslight Anthem and and Leeds-based post rock group Glissando . In our profiles section there are articles on New Haven, Connecticut label Safety Meeting Records and Alan McGee’s musical career with the Laughing Apple and Biff Bang Pow. There are also reviews of new DVDs by Midnight Choir and Herman’s Hermits In our live section there are reviews of shows by the Fleet Foxes, John Cooper Clarke, M Ward, Tricky, People in Planes, Soap and Skin and the Thermals. In our features section Anthony Middleton, in our regular ‘Soundtrack of Our Lives’ column, in which our writes tell of the personal impact of music on their lives, writes about living in Camden in the early 90s on the fringes of the Brit Pop scene. Ben Howarth in his ‘Condemned to Rock ‘n’ Roll column looks back on the musical career of the late great John Martyn, while Katie Anderson provides new ‘Photoscapes’ of recent shows by the Gaslight Anthem and Late of the Pier. Our Re : View slot, in which we look back on albums from the past, reflects on Bob Dylan and The Band's 'The Basement Tapes' Our Website of the Month is Too Cool to Die, the new website of Alan McGee which focuses primarily on new bands. There are 32 album and single reviews. In our previous up-date in February just for album and single reviews we ran another nineteen reviews. We have a new writer this month. Jeff Thiessen comes from Saskatchewan and has contributed to various other music print and on-line publications in the past including 'Crawdaddy', 'Perfect Sound Forever' and 'The Music Magazine'.
