intro
Inconsistent, confused and unfortunately ultimately grating second album from German metal act, Beehover
A swirling, confused mass of guitars, drums and vocal aggression, 'Heavy Zooo' tries hard to bring some progressive sensitivity to hard rock. Beehoover veer between straight up rocking and more contemplative noise but never seem to settle on anything consistent, even within individual songs. This is entertaining for a while but after a time it begins to grate. Musically, 'Heavy Zooo' is great. The production is slick. The riffs are catchy. The musicianship is good. At times it seems Beehoover are going for a classic heavy metal approach with big chords and slightly shrill vocals. Then they slide into something more detailed and nuanced before rushing back to another crushing riff in a more stoner rock tradition. Something somewhere is missing though. The vocals are buried so far down in the mix they blur into each other and fail to stamp any definite identity on any individual tracks. This lack of any unifying point to hold together the music makes the whole proposition difficult to follow. It veers wildly from one minute to the next with no real coherence. Rather being dragged along enjoyably in the wake of the music, the listener is left floundering amid a sea of guitars and incomprehensible lyrics, trying to guess where it might have run off to. 'Heavy Zooo' is not a bad ride while it does stay on track, but where it eventually leaves you is not a particularly memorable

This is not a review. This is an addition: Dear Daniel Cressey, the cover of the promo CD you have reviewed here is painstaikingly designed to give you as music writer not only the music to review but also to load you up with all necessary info about a band and details you should throw into the equation when reviewing this music. In other words: All you need to know about the band is printed on the fucking CD, so why don't you read it? Beehoover has NO GUITARS!
