intro

Cure-influenced debut single from much hyped new band, Black Kids

Black Kids hail from Jacksonville, Florida and are very much hyped up at the moment, so much so that I wanted to hear them first before buying their debut single. Having seen them on ‘Later...’, I wasn't impressed, but on record it is another story. ‘I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You’ originally appeared on Black Kids’ ‘Wizard of Ahhs’ free download EP from late last year. Its backing recalls the frenzy of the Go Team, but is also has a big 1980’s wow factor to it. It has a fast, poppy sound until Reggie Youngblood’s vocals kick in, which recall Robert Smith of the Cure at his most poppy. In fact as the song progresses it ends up sounding so much like the Cure that they really should sue the Black Kids for it. ‘You Turn Me On’ the first of the B sides and a cover of a Beat Happening song, has a 60’s influenced garage rock sound, recollecting especially the Fuzztones, but also throws into its mix a good dose of Bauhaus-style Gothic rock. ‘Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover’, another cover, this time of the Sophie B. Hawkins hit single, is synth based and has a vocal from Reggie somewhere between David Bowie doing ‘Fame’, Edwyn Collins at the time of Orange Juice and Darren Hayman from Hefner. It has an electronic-based, new romantic sound. A seven inch version is on pink vinyl, some of which are signed, while there is a white vinyl dance remix version on twelve inch.
