intro
Standard American indie film soundtrack for run-of-the-mill and copycat new film, 'Juno'
When I first saw the 'Juno' movie back in December last year, I thought it was okay, but I was also annoyed at how much it tried to be like 'Ghost World', the fantastic film starring Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson. Just like Birch’s character Enid, Juno is a very verbal teenage girl. Sometimes with both films you were left wondering if the filmmakers were trying to break some kind of record in the amount ofs word you can say in one minute. Recently, I saw 'Juno' again, and, while I still thought it was okay but little else, this time I noticed the soundtrack more. And once again, I found myself comparing that too to 'Ghost World'. In that movie, we got a healthy dose of Indian Bollywood-music, the Buzzcocks and old-school blues. In 'Juno' we get a lot of the Moldy Peaches (or more accurately, songs from one of the duo’s members, Kimya Dawson, and her new band Antsy Pants); some old classics from Mott The Hoople, the Velvet Underground, the Kinks and Buddy Holly, and of course some Belle and Sebastian. All in all, this is your standard American indie film soundtrack. According to the press, Ellen Page, who stars as Juno, has chosen a lot of the songs herself, which doesn’t surprise me, as the closing track is a re-recording of The Moldy Peaches’ 'Anyone Else But You', played by Ellen and her co-star Michael Cera. Very cute, and very predictable.
