intro

Solid debut single from London act Madding Crowd, which despite poor vocals, brings back good memories of Dr Feelgood

When I read the press release on Madding Crowd I thought that they sounded interesting. Four members all born in different decades ? They write their sounds on roof tops ? Mmmmmm, it gets your attention doesn’t it? 'Modern Man' starts with a stuttering beat that has an early New Wave sound. "I’ve got a day job working for the man/You’ve got a night job doing what you can" vocalist Mark Herbert sings and your heart starts to sink quicker than a lead balloon. His lyrics are just not strong enough to keep your interest up which is a shame as there is nothing wrong with the construction of this song. There is plenty going on, enough to make it otherwise a really good record. With its rock blues sound, they resemble Dr Feelgood in many ways and that is a compliment I don’t pay often. If writing songs on rooftops produces songs like this then can we please have gardens in all roof top spaces?
