Buffalo Tom - Bad Phone Call
Label: New West Records
Format: 7"

intro

Underwhelming first new single in nine years from Boston-based hardcore band Buffalo Tom

This very limited 7 inch is the first release by Boston's Buffalo Tom in nine years. ‘Bad Phone Call’ is not classic Buffalo Tom. It is fairly mainstream and very middle of the road from this once hardcore band. Buffalo Tom came out at the same time as Hole and Nirvana and, while their early records in fact came out on SST and Beggars, the whole early Sub Pop era of grunge. ‘Bad Phone Call’ doesn’t match up to the quality of their past work load at all. The vocals on it are divided between Bill Janovitz, the main singer and guitarist, and bass player Chris Colbourn. At a recent show at the London Scala they showed that live they have lost none of their roar, but that fire is just lacking on this release. It is pleasant enough, but not really good enough and nothing grabs you at all. The B side, ‘Man in Me’, is a live cover of an old Dylan song. It has more balls and, raw in sound, has a mouth organ solo so Uncle Bob will be pleased but it wasn’t a great song to start off with.
