Hello and welcome to the June edition of the Pennyblackmusic magazine. At the end of last year we launched Pennyblackmusic Radio by putting on-line our first initial broadcasts. We have spent the time since then working on improving the quality of our radio sound, and where we want to go next with it, and from towards the end of this month will be putting up shows more regularly. I will be doing an hour long show once a month and Maarten Schiethart, our radio manager, will be doing two or three shows a week. We also hope to soon after starting to involve some of our writers in putting together shows. In the meantime we have got together another edition of our magazine. Our lead interview this month is with Dan Stuart, the front man with the seminal 80’s and early 90’s Americana group, Green on Red. Stuart reformed Green on Red two years ago in tribute to their late drummer Alex McNichol to play two tours of Europe and also a ‘Don’t Look Back’ show in London at which they played all of their second album ‘Gas Food Lodging’.He has also recently gone back into the studio to record ‘Cast Iron Soul’, the second album of his side project Danny and Dusty which he formed with former Dream Syndicate front man Steve Wynn in the mid 80’s. Anthony Strutt chats to Dan Stuart, before Danny and Dusty’s first ever gig at the London Borderline, about both experiences. Our other new headline interviews this month are with American singer-songwriter Nina Nastasia and Australian drummer Dirty Three and Cat Power drummer Jim White who have collaborated together on an album, ‘You Follow Me’ ; influential Swiss industrial group the Young Gods and improvised jazz/alt. rock group which, formed by Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, also features Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and producer Jim O' Rourke. There are also interviews with reformed 80’s post punks the Scientists and rising Canadian folk/alt. country the Birds of Wales. There is also the second part of our three part interview with former Damned and Lords of the New Church guitarist and songwriter Brian James. In our profiles section there are new articles on American pop anglophile Anton Barbeau who has recently re-released two of his albums, 1995's 'Waterbugs and Beetles' and last year's 'Drug Free', and also 70’s star Tim Buckley, who has had compiled together on a new DVD, ‘My Fleeting House’, his complete television recordings. We have reviews in our live section of shows by the Acid Mothers Temple, Comets on Fire, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Ghost, Biffy Clyro, Richmond Fontaine front man Willy Vlautin, Shy Child, the Stars of Aviation, Reverend Horton Heat, Electrelane, the Scientists, Nine Black Alps and the Inspiral Carpets. In our features section professional sound man and tour manager Philip Vincent is back with a new episode in his ‘Tales from the Sound Desk’ column. In the opening instalment of a series, he tells of his recent escapades travelling in Europe with an up-and-coming indie band. Elsewhere in the features section, Adam Wood in the second part of his series on the 70’s punk examines the fashion, fanzines and sexual psychology of the movement. In our ‘Soundtrack of Our Lives’ column, in which our writers write about the effect of music at important times in their lives, Dominic Simpson tells of his teenage discovery of Sonic Youth, while in his regular ‘Condemned to Rock ‘n’ Roll‘ seies Ben Howarth looks at the many different festivals on offer to music fans this summer. In our 'Re : View' series, in which our writers look back at albums from previous years, Alex Halls examines Chicago quartet punk Rise Against's fourth album 'The Sufferer and the Witness' which he missed out on when it was released last year.
