intro

Attention-grabbing and powerful debut EP from South London-based new band the Brent Flood

This debut EP from South London band the Brent Flood really grasped my attention. New bands don’t do that much for this old man any more, so it came as a something of a shock. The Brent Flood consists of Jay Marsh on vocal duties, Rob Chesterman on guitar, Eddie Stalsberg on bass and Chris Chesterman on drums. The group include amongst their influences the likes of Morrissey and Marr, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Interpol and Brighton oddballs, British Sea Power, and have made a natural home for themselves at the Clapham Grand venue. The EP opens with ‘Heavy Petting’, a track that didn’t grab me on first play at all, but its full on guitars and the sense of urgency that run through it have a beautiful sense of purpose, and I soon found it totally riveting. ‘Burn’ has a Red Hot Chilli Peppers bass line and a powerful vocal from Jay. It is fresh, sharp and full of life. ‘Lifebelt’ is softer and narrative in tone, while ‘Digging Holes’ has a faster pace, is poppy in feel, and sounds like Palace Fires. ‘Beverley’ again has a Red Hot Chilli Peppers feel but a softer vibe to it. This is very good debut indeed.
