intro
Disappointing first full length album from initially promising Swedish indiepop group the Lovekevins, who have replaced their acoustic guitars with synthesizers to unsatisfactory effect
Once upon a time Malmö band the Lovekevins played pop music in the same vein as Violent Femmes and the Lucksmiths, but now when the time has come for the first full length record, something has happened. We got an idea of the change with the single 'Private Life of a Cat' at the end of last year, where the snare drum and the acoustic guitars have been replaced by drum loops and synthesizers, and sadly, they have completed this make-over on the album. They call it "a dreamlike atmosphere, expressed with drum loops and minimalistic sounds" themselves, and sure, I can agree with them. But that's not to say that this is a good album. I keep wondering to myself why all Swedish indiepop bands nowadays have to escape into Electronica Land sooner or later. It is probably because it's easy with your own recording studio in your computer at home, but I think it's sad that there are fewer and fewer bands with the "classic" line-up. So, instead of listening to 'Vs the Snow', I put on 'Happy Happy' from the band's first 7" single, and wonder what went wrong along the way...
