intro
Well observed attack on fashionable scenesters on debut single from new Sheffield punk band the United Kingdom of America
The United Kingdom of America are from Sheffield and their first gig was at the 4 day Wasted Festival, where all the best punk bands go to play. The band are Laurence "Fever" Landau on vocals and guitar, Millicent "Millie" Murdoch on bass and Neil "Med" Medforth on drums. Being punk through and through, couture punk as their tagline has it, this their first single is a swipe at all the wannabe indie bands currently joining the scene in their droves and at scenesters generally. Starting with a very short violin intro, it is three minutes of well observed repetitive lyrics and guitars. I was disappointed when it finished. It could have done with a few more observations with their witty punchlines - my favourite "Oh look at your hair! Individuality? Fucking where?" - but only so I could prolong my sly, knowing snigger at the latest phenomenon with my seen it all before jadedness. This is definitely one for all the punks out there sick of indie kids nicking their baseball boots and tight jeans and pretending it's something new.
