intro
First album in five years from Americana act Sparklehorse, the much acclaimed solo project of Mark Linkous
'Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain' is the first album in five years from Sparklehorse, the project of Mark Linkous. It was recorded in North Carolina with added collaborators among others including Dangermouse, members of the Flaming Lips and Tom Waits. 'Don't Take My Sunshine Away' opens it. This sounds very experimental in a mid 60's Beatles way, with the harmonies of Mojave 3 being added to the mix before it gets more trip hop in style towards the end. 'Getting It Wrong' is very Portishead, very mellow and very downbeat. 'Shade and Honey' is quietly paced and involves some lovely Americana style guitar, while 'See the Light, which again is gentle in tone, has a soft groove, but sounds quite eerie although in a pleasant sort of way. 'Return to Me' is very minimal in its vocal and its guitar backing. 'Some Sweet Day' is much more uptempo and sounds like how great Americana should be and a little bit like the Velvet Underground too. 'Ghost in the Sky' is much faster and has a full-on rocking sound and a great beat to it. 'Mountains' has a husky vocal to it which recalls J Mascis, but everything else is laid back about it. 'Morning Hollow' is as slow as the Red House Painters and very sad, but played very well. 'It's Not So Hard' is loud with a distorted vocal and big drums. 'Knives of Summertime' is pleasantly paced and gentle. The title track meanwhile is like a slow Portishead on downers and also has a hint of Tindersticks to it.
