intro
Competent, but often hit and miss garage rock on third solo album from Mudhoney guitarist, Steve Turner
When Mudhoney guitarist Steve Turner first launched his solo project in 2004 with the album 'Searching for a Melody' , he was in full folk-country singer-songwriter mode and a marked distance from his main day job. Turner then turned up the amps a little way for the following 'Bad Ideas' in 2005. Now with 'New Wave Punk Asshole' the amps have gone up further still and he’s stepped more into the bratt-ish mode of Mudhoney. There’s the likes of the opener 'No One Gives a Shit' and 'Stupid Blues'with Turner declaring that his friends are “stupid”. All the songs are short, punchy and sharp. Even the longest song comes in under three minutes; quite a few just make it past the minute mark. Songs like 'Everyone’s an Ex' and 'Sex Date Saturday Night' come thick and fast in a haze of garage rock, pounding drums and cranked up guitars. '“Baby Baby Baby Baby'is given a 60's inflexion as if ? and the Mysterians had hooked up with Booker T for a jam session. As with many a solo project though 'New Wave Punk Asshole' never really manages to assert its own identity away from the presence of the main group – in this case Mudhoney. As with the recent solo albums from two of the Manic Street Preachers, 'New Wave Punk Asshole' will be little more than just a side project for Turner’s spare time. Sure, it’s a competent effort with some memorable moments but it's little more than that.
