intro
Eclectic indie rock from genre-hoppers he Seal Cub Clubbing Club back with a second EP
Genre-hoppers the Seal Cub Clubbing Club’s second EP opens with ‘Celine’; a sort of mix between the Doors, the Fall, Talking Heads and Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. It’s as good as that sounds too, complete with a high pitched cry of “Celiiiiiiine!” in the chorus. The second track, ‘Drums in Der Night’, is less hard rocking, more rock and rolling, with what I think is a bit of a Low influence coming through every now and then. Again, this track has an amazingly appealing chorus, and is very danceable. ‘World of Fashion’ slows the pace down, and keeps the Low sounds going strong (which is a good thing). Running throughout the song is a funk-style riff which plays against the grumbling organ crawl and slow, stomping beat. Short bursts of electronic noise guide the track to its conclusion. The shortest track on the EP, ‘Threebie’, is a slow waltz that hints at psychedelia. It reminds me of some of the stranger songs from Of Arrowe Hill’s first album, 'The Spring Heel Penny Dreadful'. The EP closes with ‘(I’m Gonna Get That) Rabbit’, a soft indie-pop song mixed with the post-rock oddness of Sonic Youth. The vocals on this track are really impressive, almost reminding me of Chris Cornell’s vocals on some of the more ballad-style Soundgarden tracks. In fact, this song has a very ‘Black Hole Sun’ feel to it, while still sounding original and interesting. This EP bodes well for the Seal Cub Clubbing Club's’s first full album, which I really hope comes out soon. How can anyone not like a band who sing “Aye-up, how do I lose this bed cold?”
