intro
Eclectic and diverse third solo album from Wilco member and "one of the world's greatest percussionists", Glenn Kotche
Time to sit up straight and pay attention to one of the world's greatest percussionists: Glenn Kotche. Wilco's percussionist releases his third solo album through Nonesuch. But let's file 'Mobile' as a classic Warp Records LP, shall we? Kotche effortlessly, because he's a bit of a genius, switches patterns with such diverse styles as breakbeats and ragtime left, right and centre. 'Mobile' is untailored, direct and live! There are car noises unwantonly captured on the opening 'Clapping Music Variations'. As a result of Kotche's principle to record live whenever possible, 'Mobile' knows little sophistication in terms of production yet it has got a great sense of purpose and direction. My favourite ingredient of 'Mobile' is the banging on cowbells. 'Monkey Chant' comes with the fabricated electronica of crickets and for once an eleven minutes long track stayed with me. Glenn Kotche is a genuine musician who clutches a wealth of instruments and churns out their intrinsic sounds in snappy compositions. He may go to university but, boy, this album is even funky!
