Suicide Sports Club - I Don't Know
Label: B. Rock
Format: CDS

intro

Relaxed and super cool hip-hop with elements of both the Fun Lovin' Criminals and Faithless from unusually-named London duo Suicide Sports Club

This London duo are very cool. The strangely named cockneys have a relaxed hip-hop feel to them, with singer Luke Branccaccio's vocals a combination of those of Huey of the Fun Lovin’ Criminals and the dark, deep tones of Faithless lyricist Maxi Jazz. 'I Don't Know' sounds like it would be right at home in an underground club somewhere in the rougher side of London. As well as "the album version" which is the main track, there are various mixes on the single. The “Soul Mechaniks” mix gives the song a stripped down feel, while the “King Unique Vocal mix”, which sounds like it could have been made any time since the early 1990’s, has a total dance flavour to it. It does not come across dated, but again it doesn’t necessarily sound like it was made in 2005, which is quite unique, as we all know how dated electro music can sound. Somehow though Suicide Sports Club pull this off. The final mix is that of the “Loose Cannons Tower block dub” mix. This is as it sounds and has a real dub and “ghetto” feel to it. Again it adds another dimension to 'I Don't Know' and makes it feel like another song altogether. This version makes you feel like you could be on the wrong side of the tracks somewhere in the capital, with the street sounds and sirens playing in the background. The fact that this mix is over 9 minutes long helps it as its gives them enough time to build the song up and to add all the other elements in. Suicide Sports Club seem like the sort of guys who would hang out away from the crowd as they ooze cool. Again I could be wrong, and they could be Star Wars worshiping geeks like the rest of us, but if they are, they’re doing a very convincing job of sounding like “Bad ass mo. Fo’s”. Personally I like it and I would love to hear more from these guys.
