Laudable, but flawed political rap on the highly regarded Anticon label from hip-hop rappers Jel
It seems a bit late in the day for political raps about the current ‘War on Terror’. Maybe people do need reminding though so JEL has released ‘WMD’ on probably the most consistently interesting hip-hop label – Anticon. While a solid piece of political rap a la Public Enemy this doesn’t set stereos on fire. While laudable in intention and with decent production and vocals this never rises above slightly better than average. Indeed the section linking together different members of the Bin Laden family and their links to the US is rather like someone reciting the biblical passage in Genesis where for thirty odd lines all you have is “X begat Y, who begat Z, who begat ...” Oh get to the bloody fire and brimstone and cool stuff already is the reasonable response. It also holds for WMD. This isn’t a bad song, but it would benefit from a bit of, well... fire and brimstone.
